The History and Cultural Significance of Chess


You may have known chess was a pretty old game, but did you know it's over a thousand years old? This classic strategy game originated in India in the 5th century AD. It then spread to East Asia, finally making its way to Europe and adopting the rules we know today. The shapes and values of the pieces have changed significantly over time, as well as the rules, but by taking a look at the history of chess, it's easy to see how the modern game is derived from the classic variants. Today, chess is played all around the world and nearly every country in the world is involved in the World Chess Federation.
